A2 Music Videos

At the start of the course we had to email Annie Lennox's manager in order to gain permission to use her version of 'I put a spell on you' otherwise we risk breaking the law due to copyright regulation. Luckily we got a quick response allowing us to do so meaning we could engage in creating our own music video for the track.

Despite the genre of jazz booming in popularity in the 60s, 70s and 80s I still believe people will show an interest in today’s society. In my video I showed how younger people can relate to jazz and soul music through using a contemporary narrative relating to the lives of many young people, furthermore this combines older fashioned music with a storyline that many young people can relate to or find interesting. As a result the target audience is very broad as the genre may be appreciated by adults however the visuals are appealing for younger viewed (teenagers). My aim was to create a music video where the genre doesn’t limit the demographic who can enjoy, which was accomplished by using a stereotypical jazz themed opening and cut scenes with a modern looking narrative.

This is the pitch we presented in class to share our ideas and gain criticism.  

At the start of the year we had to present our current ideas to the class in return for ideas or constructive criticism, this process is helpful as we may be introduced to new ideas we may of not previously thought of. Despite the video not coming out in high quality we still found the audience feedback helpful.

As a group we are planning to film each separate scene on separate days as it allows us enough time to focus on capturing exactly what we want rather than rushing around trying to cram all filming into a short period of time.  Day 1. We are using Enfield Grammar School's main hall stage to recreate a scene from another Jazz artists video, Marvin Gaye. Furthermore we have arranged for a lighting specialist to help us create a high-key effect on Serine which contrasts from other jazz videos as they tend to be more relaxed and use softer tones.   Day 2. We are filing at Ellie's house where we can use her jacuzzi for a scene, we have set up additional decorative lighting as it helps to make the rise-en-scene look more romantic helping to provide the music video with more depth and helping to give viewers a clearer idea as to whats going on. After comparing a variety of band names we have finally decided to call it IVY18. We thought of this name when looking at other artists albums names, our main inspiration was Adele as she uses her name in her albums follwed by her age. Ivy is also the character who Serine is playing and she's 18 hence the name IVY18.

Creating music videos form scratch is undoubtably difficult therefore we have been looking for further ideas on Youtube looking at other artists in a similar genre and music videos with themes and ideas similar to ours. Looking at other music videos can help us make ours look more professional hence why it is important to do research.  

We pitched our idea to our classmates on October 13th, during the pitch we had not fully considered every aspect of the music video and we was open to inspiration and ideas. Afterwards we asked the audience for their opinion on our location and storyline ideas, as a result of this we are further planning using an Arab theme in a shisha lounge or in a house with arabic decor.

using online band generator names we come up with 'Magical elephants' and 'Jazz Monsters' however in class we used another game generating technique using a variety of adjectives, nouns and verbs. One band name that was mentioned was 'The amazing dragon smoked the delicious snow' however we as a group do not feel this name is relevant however we are going to continue the method we used in class until we successfully think of a name.

At the start of the school year i had planned to work on the music video project myself, creating a Rap/ Hip Hop music video, however due to a lack of school computers I am now working with the same group i worked with last year when we created a film opening. We are currently unsure of what genre we want to work with however we have narrowed it down between Jazz, HipHop and classical.

Fish Tank  is a 2009 British  drama film  written and directed by  Andrea Arnold . The film is about Mia Williams, a volatile and socially isolated 15-year-old who lives with her single mother, Joanne. The mother's new boyfriend, Conor, becomes attracted to Mia and has sex with her.  Fish Tank  was well-received and won the  Jury Prize  at the  2009 Cannes Film Festival .  It also won the 2010  BAFTA for Best British Film . It was filmed in the  Mardyke Estate  in  Havering ,  the town of  Tilbury , and the  A13 , and funded by  BBC Films  and the  UK Film Council . As an assignment, i had to research a music video with a performance based video. Yet again I've chosen a Migos song, called 'Deadz' as their videos are extremely creative and i feel a lot of time and effort is put into them to entertain the audience. Throughout the video we an orchestra playing a variety of instrumentals in beat with the instrumental, therefore making this a performance based video. As of yet i haven't decided the genre or come up with ant initial ideas however i will look at a collection of Migos' videos for inspiration as they often vary their styles which can help to spark ideas in my head.
